Fussa-shi

Two historical sake shops have continued since the Edo period. American shops line the areas near the US base. The Fussa Dog, a local dish, has been popular since 2010. You can enjoy any seasons around the Tamagawa Aqueduct and Tama River areas.

Day 1

Bread Garden

Bread Garden

Fussa Dog is B-grade Gourmet of Gussa and made its debut in 2011. It's a hotdog using either Otama or Fussa Ham. The original one is of Bread Garden, which is a three-minute walk from the west exit of Fussa station and with a recipe including Fussa Ham. Sausage on cream cheese is topped with an original salsa sauce♪
Cloud Nine Bakery

Cloud Nine Bakery

The second Fussa Dog is about a two-minute walk from the east exit of Fussa station and comes packed with sauerkraut, plus grain mustard and sliced onion. Simple but delicious♪ The whole-wheat bread is not too soft or hard (laughter). The other bread looked tasty too.
Stuben Otama

Stuben Otama

The third Fussa Dog saw me visit "Stuben Otama", a restaurant directly connected to a Otama Ham factory, for the product, which is priced at 496 yen including tax. As well as sausage, it comes complete with a thick-sliced additive-free bacon, processed according to the German method. A bulky bun and full of delicious meaty beacon as well as filling German bread. They seem to sell out quickly - I was lucky to still be able to purchase one.
Primavera

Primavera

The fourth Fussa Dog came from Primavera; a bread workshop located about 7 minute walk from Kumagawa station. I chose the Fussa Dog with salsa and cheese sauces but one with tomato and cheese sauces is also available. I found the gentle taste of the roll very reassuring.
Snack Hitoyo

Snack Hitoyo

The fifth Fussa Dog is an east-west fusion product, sandwiching a wealth of leek miso, and with perilla the main focus, while the sesame and laver topping blends perfectly with the bread. Having eaten various Fussa Dogs, I was feeling inevitably overloaded but it still didn't take me long to polish off this Fussa Dog. I realized I am Japanese.
Antique Dining Umagura

Antique Dining Umagura

Fussa is also a town of music. It hosts blues and rock festivals and shops for music Lovers, including UZU - a long-established live house and the birthplace of THE STREET SLIDERS. This is the courtyard of Antique Dining Umagura, an open terrace of sorts. Summer weekends see the courtyard accommodate live performances.

The shop's recommendation is "stewed cow tendons and creamy mashed potato", which seems to have been a smash hit ever since day one. Great cost performance at just 780 yen!! Simmered cow tendon.
Toyoko Inn Fussa

Toyoko Inn Fussa

Fussa City has only one accommodation, namely the Toyoko Inn Fussa. I had a good night's sleep on a bed which was 140cm wide (12.2m²).

Day 2

American House

American House

In Fussa, which houses the Yokota Base, many US army homes were built to house families of the occupying forces after World War II. This time I visited the American House, which is a community space established in 2014.

The vintage furniture and miscellaneous goods make me feel like I was watching an old overseas drama. I kept expecting Samantha of "Bewitched" to come out (laughter).
Tiger House

Tiger House

A rare-grilled steak topping some rice, with garlic-flavored sauce. All mixed on a hot iron plate for steak-fried rice with garlic. At first I thought "too much rice" but once I started eating, I could polish everything off. Tons of food!! This shop is recommended if you want to fill your tummy.
Ishikawa Brewery

Ishikawa Brewery

They started producing sake on September 1, 1863 (in Japan's old calendar). Production got underway in Ogawa Village, on the opposite shore of the Tama River, but in 1881, they newly built a kura (storehouse) in the current location and relocated. The current brand name "Tamajiman" has been in use since 1933 and beer has been brewed since February 1888.
Kasen-Tamura Shuzojo

Kasen-Tamura Shuzojo

Tamura Shuzo established a sake-brewing business here in 1822, even earlier than the Ishikawa Brewery. At the time in Edo, which had been developing like wildfire, the demand for eating and drinking was expanding and instead of the "kudari-zake" produced in the Kyoto-Osaka region, the shogunate recommended the production of "Edo jimawari-zake" instead.
Minami-Inari Shrine

Minami-Inari Shrine

Inari Shrine; located in front of Ishikawa Brewery and just 200 meters from Kumagawa Shrine. The huge Japanese zelkova tree is a designated natural monument of Fussa City. Although a sacred tree, it is unenclosed so you can get right up close to the zelkova tree.
Fussa Shinmeisha

Fussa Shinmeisha

Enshrined deities include the Sun Goddess, Izanagi, Izanami, Mizuhanome, Toyoukebime, Ohyamakuinokami, and Sugawara no Michizane. I wondered at all the gods and found it had merged the neighboring five gods and seven enshrined deities in 1874.
